A queer, neurospicy horror movie review blog

This I believe in… I believe in death. I believe in disease. I believe in injustice and inhumanity, torture and anger and hate… I believe in murder. I believe in pain. I believe in cruelty and infidelity. I believe in slime and stink and every crawling, putrid thing… every possible ugliness and corruption, you son of a bitch. I believe… in you.

Weekend Wrap-Up: Lightning Round!

Did you miss me? It’s been a while! Come on in, take your shoes off! Look, it’s been a crazy month for everybody. At some point I gave up on horror movies and ran away into the woods of West Virginia. You do what you need to cope, I guess. Somehow I have still managed to watch quite a few movies, but that’s beyond the point.

Although, if you’re up in northern Appalachia, gitch’yinz on dahn to Mythical Pizza in Berkeley Springs, WV!! You can’t miss it, Bumble is waiting right outside to greet you with an indistinguishable roar. I’m sipping my Mythical Squonk Raspberry Lime Rickey Soda here in my hotel room as I type, sort of wishing I had another flight of tiny little 4-inch pizzas. Seriously. If you’re a cryptid lover within roadtripping distance, it’s worth the drive.

Well, I suppose we should get back to movies, huh? I can’t abandon you too long, not during the month of love and hearts and blood and other red squishy insides. This weekend’s wrap up is really a summary of the back half of January, so I’m going to keep it brief. However!! There is a very special edition of Sunday Scratch-Off awaiting you at the end of the list. I reckon you should be excited, it’ll be a Scream-ing good time!!

So, in order of date and time watched, it’s time for a Weekend Lightning Round!!

Don’t Look Now – Donald Sutherland’s Butt!!

The Medium – This needed about 500% more Nim

The Psychic – This movie holds your hand the entire way through in a way that I loved

Ghostwatch – If you are looking for more like Late Night With the Devil, this is your guy.

Blue Velvet – At first my discomfort with how sex is handled in this colored my opinion. Now I think it’s sort of brilliant considering it’s about a young man getting in WAY over his head.

Cathy’s Curse – Man, what can’t this girl do??

Alice, Sweet Alice – Do you have a Catholicism kink and/or religious trauma? Wanna see the most badass little girl run circles around her sleazy landlord? Can you stomach some upsetting animal stuff and some aggressive fatphobia? This is your movie.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me – I wasn’t ready for how strong the Laura Palmer Feels were. Heartbreaking.

Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces – This was fine? I watched it because I was told there could be some information relevant to TP: The Return.

Insidious – Ok I was a stinky little snob watching this but in retrospect I really liked it. I could have done without the stupid gas mask microphone bit and the Computer Smiles on the twins.

The House of The Devil – I was so into this that I got mad at my husband for wanting to watch it with me.

This Week’s Sunday Scratch-Off Is…

The Entire Scream Franchise!? That’s right, Dear Reader, my scratch off poster has insisted that I watch not one film, but seven (Sorry, I’m not trying to squeeze the TV series into this week)!!! Soooo, I figured we’d do something a little special with it. Instead of watching just one of the films or trying to squeeze all seven into one day of watching, I will (try to!) watch one Scream film every day for the next week and meet you back here Friday with a nice, long post about this iconic body of work. Got it? Good! I’ve only seen the first one, and I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty sure I fell asleep before the end. This is going to put a nice dent in my classic slasher canon.

Well, it’s good to be back. I hope you are taking care of yourself out there, Dear Reader. Those Horrors do be Persisting. Stay close to those you care about. Take yourself out for pizza if you’re starting to feel the creep of wintery existential dread tugging at the frays around your edges.

Until next time, Dear Reader, the horrors may persist, but the tender boughs of innocence burn first, and the wind rises, and then all goodness is in jeopardy.
